A lack of markets and high costs have led to the removal of glass from local recycling programs. The elimination of glass isn't limited to our local programs but is something happening across Pennsylvania and the rest of the country. Items deemed recyclable are identified by the recycling centers that market the materials, not the municipalities. If glass recycling markets open up in the future, it will be considered to be added back into the program. Residents are reminded to only recycle what is listed as acceptable. Many years of people placing unacceptable items into their recycling bins have contributed to the current recycling crisis.
The City of Hermitage continues to be committed to recycling and minimizing waste going into the landfills, while trying to provide the best curbside program at the lowest possible cost to residents.
