[ARCHIVED] Hermitage increases substitute teacher pay

The board on Monday raised the pay for a person holding a Pennsylvania teaching certificate to $100 from $90. Emergency http://sharonherald.cnhi.newsmemory.com/publink.php?shareid=063b821edcertified subs – those who hold bachelor’s degrees in other disciplines and receive sub certifications through Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Grove City – will get $90, up from $80.

Under the days-worked scale, those who substitute 46 to 90 days will receive $105 if they are certified subs and $95 if they are emergency subs.

The pay scale is $110 and $100 for days 91 to 135, and $115 and $105 for days 136 to 180. Superintendent Dr. Daniel Bell said the substitute pay has been “stagnant” for six or seven years, and there are fewer subs available.

“It’s a difficult job because there is no guarantee of work,” said Bell, who subbed in his early post-college days.

“The unemployment rate is dropping, that adds to it. Less people are going into education.”

The increases will cost the district about $27,000 more in sub wages, based on the same number of sub days worked in 201617, he said.

“We want to stay competitive,” Bell said.

Many substitutes are on the sub lists of more than one school district, he said.

“We are all fishing in the same pond. We’re not in competition with other districts, but there is some competition for their (subs) services,” Bell said.
